Diagnostic Evaluation
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a medical problem for which we do not have a medical test. As such the evaluation is mostly a careful history taking. In addition, checklists are used to see where the person falls on the spectrum of ADHD symptoms. Lastly, there is a screen for comorbidity or things that initiate or complicate ADHD. These include depression, anxiety, oppositionality, learning disabilities, and others. Dr. Barnard does the ADHD evaluations. If ADHD is present then Dr. Burnside meets with the patient and parents to discuss ADHD, the brain, and treatment alternatives. Therefore, each patient who has gone through our diagnostic evaluation has seen two doctoral level experts in two different disciplines before beginning treatment. This ensures a very thorough evaluation. Once treatment begins we revisit comorbidity to decide if additional treatment is needed.
